NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MONDAY, AUGUST 16, 2010 FORMER ROUGHNECKS WR ANTHONY ARMSTRONG HAS GREAT START TO 2010 PRESEASON WITH REDSKINS ARMSTRONG RECORDS TWO CATCHES FOR NINE YARDS & ONE TOUCHDOWN IN PRESEASON MATCH-UP WITH BILLS MIDLAND, TX. : The West Texas Roughnecks have established a steady tradition of helping players reach higher levels of professional football. One of the more successful stories from that area has been wide receiver Anthony Armstrong who has seen his career begin with the Roughnecks organization and reach the level of the NFL with the Washington Redskins. Armstrong (5'11", 182 lbs.), who is in his second season with the Redskins, is off to a great start in terms of the 2010 preseason. In the Redskins preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills back on Friday, August 13, Armstrong scored the first points of the game for the Redskins with a four-yard touchdown reception from QB Donovan McNabb. Armstrong would go on to finish with two receptions for nine yards and one score in the Redskins 42-17 win over Buffalo. Before beginning his professional career with the Roughnecks, Armstrong was a four-year letterman at West Texas A&M from 2003 to 2006. He finished his collegiate career as West Texas A&M's fourth all-time leading receiver with 145 receptions for 1,768 yards. He was named second-team All-Lone Star Conference as a senior after leading West Texas A&M with 54 receptions for 607 yards and four touchdowns. As a junior he was named the LSC South Receiver of the Year and earned First-Team All-LSC South honors after posting 54 receptions for 740 yards and four touchdowns.
Following his time with the Roughnecks, Armstrong would move on to the Arena Football League with the Dallas Desperados beginning in 2007. Following the '07 season in which Armstrong recorded 10 catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns in four games played, Armstrong would go on to post 83 receptions for 1,148 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Desperados in 2008. His success in the AFL would lead to another incredible move up the ranks of professional football to the NFL. Armstrong was signed to the Miami Dolphins following the '08 AFL season and would spend the entire NFL season on the Dolphins' practice squad. After spending the whole 2009 preseason with the Dolphins, Armstrong was waived by the organization back on August 29, 2009 but he would finish the season on the Redskins' practice squad after being signed by Washington on October 21, 2009. Currently, Armstrong is second on the Redskins depth chart behind leading receiver Santana Moss as the team continues training camp. The Redskins next preseason game will come on Saturday, August 21 when the team hosts the Baltimore Ravens at 7:00 PM ET. The Roughnecks organization will always remember Anthony Armstrong for what he did on the field during the 2006 season, but most importantly, he will be remembered as a prime example of the Roughnecks tradition for moving their players up to higher levels of professional football.
